about

I'm always nervous about using the word, "Negro," fearing to cause offense. But I believe that, at present at least, "Negro Spiritual," is what might be called the, "agreed upon," name for this genre.

It's always thrilling to find a tune that'll not only fit within the limited GHB/SSP chanter's range, but can actually be accommodated in two keys within that range, facilitating a key-change part way through.

The vast majority of tracks on this album were arranged by Timothy Cummings in his collection, "The Piper's Hymnal," which can be purchased at birchenmusic.com -- there is at least some variation from the arrangement, one might call, "artistic license," that or, "an inability to play it as written"... I can't recommend Tim's collection highly enough, though, it's an excellent resource.
